Innovations on the Land

This last week I had the opportunity to attend Innovations on the Land in Lincoln.  The symposium, which I’ve mentioned before brought together nationwide Leopold Conservation Award winners for socializing, listening to speakers, and the opportunity to network and interact.  There are currently eight Leopold winners from Nebraska, seven of which were present.  The symposium was a great place to see old friends,  make new ones and listen to stories and panels from across the country.

The evening speaker on Thursday was Photographer Michael Forsberg.  Mike is a Nebraska native that has focused much of his work on the Great Plains.  He’s been published in National Geographic and Audubon among others.  He has a couple of documentaries that have been released including one where he traveled over 100,000 miles exploring the Great Plains.

His presentation touched on conservation, being aware of our surroundings, and willingness to learn from others.  He’s currently working on a project with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln called the Platte Basin Time Lapse Project.  The Project spans over three states and uses multiple cameras that are permanently stationed that snap one photo every hour every day.  I highly encourage you to check out the website at www.plattebasintimelapse.com and watch the videos.  My personal favorite is the one stationed on a soybean/corn field.  The Project could one day be used in curriculums and scientific teachings all over the world.  Check it out!

A big thanks to the Sand County Foundation, Nebraska Cattlemen, and all the other sponsors for putting together an amazing event,
